The hymn that welcomes the Sabbath on Friday evening, composed in the Kabbalistic circle at Safed and adopted with remarkable speed by nearly every Jewish community. It is an acrostic on the author's name. The Sabbath is addressed as a bride and a queen, and in many congregations the last verse is sung facing the door with a bow, enacting her arrival. It is a clear case of a Kabbalistic composition passing into universal use with its mystical framework largely invisible to those singing it.
