About

The Diocese of Newark was established in 1853 covering all of New Jersey and was elevated to an archdiocese in 1937. Its mother church, the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, was constructed between 1899 and 1954 and was elevated to a minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1995. The archdiocese today comprises Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Union counties in northern New Jersey.
