The Archdiocese of San Francisco was established in 1853, with Dominican priest Joseph Sadoc Alemany installed as its first archbishop. It comprises the city and county of San Francisco along with Marin and San Mateo counties. Its mother church is the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption, rebuilt on Cathedral Hill after fire destroyed the previous cathedral building in 1962.
