The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is the largest Lutheran denomination in the United States, formed in 1988 by the merger of three Lutheran church bodies. Its churchwide offices, the Lutheran Center, are located in Chicago, Illinois. The ELCA is organized into 65 synods encompassing congregations across the United States, the Caribbean, and the Virgin Islands.
