About

Harmandir Sahib at Amritsar, widely called the Golden Temple, is the holiest gurdwara of Sikhism. Guru Arjan began it in 1581 and installed the Adi Granth there in 1604. It stands in the middle of a pool reached by a causeway, with doors on four sides. The Akal Takht beside it is the chief seat of religious authority in Sikhism. The langar serves free vegetarian meals to anyone who comes, in the order of a hundred thousand a day, and the complex is managed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee.
