The Kashi Vishwanath temple at Varanasi is dedicated to Shiva as Vishweshwara, lord of the universe, and is one of the twelve jyotirlinga shrines. The temple has been destroyed and rebuilt repeatedly; the present building was raised in 1780 by Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore. Since 1983 it has been run by a government appointed board of trustees. It stands close to the Ganges ghats and is among the most visited Hindu temples in north India.
