The Mahabodhi temple at Bodh Gaya marks the place where Siddhartha Gautama is held to have attained enlightenment beneath the bodhi tree. The present brick tower dates from the fifth or sixth century, with earlier elements on the site. It was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2002. The temple is run by the Bodh Gaya Temple Management Committee, constituted under an act of 1949 that requires four Buddhist and four Hindu members, an arrangement that remains contested.
