About

San Fernando Cathedral is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Antonio and the seat of its archbishop, with a parish founded in 1731 by Canary Islands settlers. Its sanctuary, built between 1738 and 1750, survives from the original colonial-era church and is considered the oldest cathedral sanctuary in the continental United States. The cathedral faces Main Plaza in downtown San Antonio and remains an active parish and pilgrimage site.
