The international headquarters of the Theosophical Society has stood at Adyar in Chennai since 1882, on riverside grounds that hold the Adyar Library and Research Centre and a banyan tree long used for gatherings. The society is not a religion and asks no belief of its members beyond assent to its three declared objects.
