The Washington D.C. Temple is a temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Kensington, Maryland, roughly ten miles north of the U.S. Capitol. Dedicated in 1974, it was the first Latter-day Saint temple built in the eastern United States and is clad in Alabama white marble with a six-spire design visible from the Capital Beltway. It serves Latter-day Saints throughout the Washington metropolitan area and is used for sacred ordinances rather than regular Sunday worship.
