West Angeles Church of God in Christ was founded in 1943 by Elder Clarence E. Church as a storefront congregation in South Los Angeles. Under Bishop Charles E. Blake Sr., who became pastor in 1969, it grew into one of the largest congregations in the Church of God in Christ denomination and later built a 5,000-seat cathedral on Crenshaw Boulevard. It remains a flagship COGIC congregation in Los Angeles.
