The moon moves through eight phases between one new moon and the next, from new through waxing crescent to full and back down through waning crescent. A reading finds the phase the moon was in at the moment of birth and reads what that phase says about how a person begins things and how they let them go.
History
The eight-phase division of the moon's roughly twenty nine and a half day synodic cycle is a long standing and plain descriptive scheme, well established well before its adoption into personality astrology. Reading a birth moon phase as a signal in its own right, treating the sun-moon relationship at birth as a single beginning-to-completion cycle rather than reading the two luminaries separately, is most associated in twentieth century astrology with the writing of Dane Rudhyar, whose work on what he called the lunation cycle shaped how many modern astrologers approach the birth phase as a distinct, nameable reading rather than an incidental detail of a fuller chart.
The Eight Phases
New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter and Waning Crescent, in order, make up the full cycle from one new moon to the next.
How A Reading Is Constructed
A reading computes the angular relationship between the sun and moon at the moment of birth to find which of the eight phases the moon was in, then reads that single phase as a description of temperament tied to beginnings and endings, a New Moon birth read as instinctive and initiating, a Full Moon birth read as illuminated and culminating, and so on across the cycle, rather than reading the sun and moon's sign placements independently of each other.
