The Waxing Crescent is the second of the Moon's eight traditionally named phases, falling as the sliver of lit surface grows from just after New Moon to just short of the First Quarter, its illumination increasing from about one to forty nine percent. Observing and naming the Moon's changing shape is an ancient, near universal practice, embedded in calendars from the Babylonian to the Hebrew and Islamic, but the specific magical correspondence many modern pagan and Wiccan writers attach to this phase, that it favours new beginnings and spells for growth, is a twentieth century overlay onto much older observational astronomy. It follows the New Moon and precedes the First Quarter in the eight phase cycle.

The Waxing Crescent, the Growing Sliver

The Waxing Crescent is the phase following the new moon, when a thin sliver of the Moon's lit face becomes visible and grows from night to night, its illumination increasing from a trace toward half. It appears low in the western sky after sunset and sets soon after. The crescent is the emblem of the new month in the lunar calendars, and its first sighting fixes the start of the Islamic month. Traditionally the waxing crescent is read as a time of emergence and gathering momentum, the first visible growth of what the new moon began. These are the astronomical facts of the phase together with the meanings traditions attach to it; the crescent is simply the sunlit edge of the Moon as it moves along its orbit away from the line between Earth and Sun.

The lunar cycle from one new moon to the next, called the synodic month, averages about twenty-nine and a half days, noticeably longer than the sidereal month of roughly twenty-seven and a third days it takes the Moon to return to the same position against the background stars; the difference exists because the Earth itself has moved along its own orbit around the Sun in the meantime, so the Moon must travel a little further to catch up and realign with the Sun as seen from Earth. The waxing crescent falls early in that longer synodic reckoning, and because the phases are what nearly every lunar and lunisolar calendar actually tracks, this is the phase, rather than the sidereal position, that determines the length of a calendar month in traditions from the Islamic Hijri year to the Hebrew and Chinese lunisolar systems.

How the Waxing Crescent Is Reckoned

The waxing crescent covers the interval between conjunction and first quarter, elongation from zero to ninety degrees, with the lit limb turned toward the Sun and therefore toward the western horizon after sunset in the northern hemisphere. Its orientation is not fixed: from the tropics the crescent appears to lie on its back, and from the southern hemisphere it points the other way, so descriptions of the crescent's direction are local rather than universal.

The phases are produced by the changing angle between the Sun, the Earth and the Moon, and the quantity that defines them is elongation, the Moon's angular distance from the Sun as seen from the Earth. The complete round from one new moon to the next is the synodic month, about 29.53 days, and it is longer than the sidereal month of about 27.32 days in which the Moon returns to the same place among the stars, because the Earth has moved along its orbit in the meantime and the Moon must travel further to catch up.

The first visibility of the crescent after conjunction is the single most consequential observation in the history of calendars, since it begins the month in the Hijri system and began it in many older ones. Whether it can be seen on a given evening depends on the elongation, the altitude above the horizon at sunset and the clarity of the air, and predicting it is a genuine problem with a substantial technical literature rather than a simple calculation.
