The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Santa Fe began Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in 2018 after hundreds of New Mexicans came forward alleging they had been sexually abused by clergy. Following four years of work by an Official Committee of nine survivor representatives, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge David T. Thuma confirmed the plan of reorganization on 29 December 2022, approved by 99 percent of voting survivors. The confirmed plan establishes a settlement trust of more than 121.5 million dollars, funded by the archdiocese, its affiliated parishes and insurance carriers, for approximately 375 survivors of nearly 400 claims filed against the archdiocese. Beyond the monetary award, the plan created a public archive of documents on the history of the abuse claims, housed at the University of New Mexico. Several religious orders active in the archdiocese also contributed separate settlements through their own funds and insurance.
