Alchemical Principles

3 entries. Click any to see everything it connects to.

The alchemical principles are the qualities the tradition held to underlie substance: the tria prima of sulphur, mercury and salt set out by Paracelsus, standing for combustibility, volatility and fixity, alongside the older mercury-sulphur theory of Arabic alchemy. They are not the ordinary substances of the same names but principles the substances exemplify. The distinction is stated repeatedly in the alchemical literature and is routinely lost in modern summaries.

The Principles Beneath Substance

The alchemical principles are the qualities the tradition held to underlie all substance. Chief among them is the tria prima of Paracelsus, sulphur, mercury and salt, standing not for the ordinary materials but for combustibility, volatility and fixity, the three principles into which any substance could be analysed. Behind this lay the older mercury-sulphur theory of the Arabic alchemists, which held all metals to be compounds of a mercurial and a sulphurous principle in varying purity.

These principles are the theoretical core of alchemy's account of matter: the reason metals could, in principle, be transmuted was that they shared the same underlying principles in different proportions and purities.

Principle, element and metal

The principles work alongside the four elements and the seven planet-metals in alchemy's layered theory of matter: the elements as the basic qualities, the principles (sulphur, mercury, salt) as the active natures, and the metals as the substances they compose. Paracelsus's tria prima in particular reshaped alchemy and early chemistry and medicine.

The atlas gives each principle its nature and its role in the theory. The metals and elements the principles relate to are treated in their own categories, and the alchemical operations under Texts & the Canon.
