Galena is the heavy, metallic, cubic-crystal grey mineral that was, and remains, the chief ore of lead, mined across the ancient and medieval world wherever workable deposits were found. It was smelted for its lead by simple roasting and reduction, a metallurgy old enough to predate written history in several regions, and it carried an added importance because many galena deposits are naturally rich enough in silver to make silver extraction from galena ore economically significant, a process called cupellation. Alchemically it was firmly tied to lead and, through lead, to Saturn, the planet of the heaviest and slowest moving classical metal. In modern chemistry it is lead(II) sulfide, its simple binary formula belying its historical importance as a source of two different metals at once.

Galena occurs as a heavy, silvery-grey mineral with a distinctive metallic luster and a tendency to form perfect cubic crystals, properties that made it easy for ancient and medieval miners to recognize even without any chemical test. Roasting galena ore in air and then smelting the resulting oxide with charcoal reduces it to metallic lead, a metallurgical sequence practiced since deep antiquity across the Near East, the Aegean and beyond, making lead one of the earliest metals worked at any real scale.
