What the Systems Assign

Reduced to eight, forty-four is read in the standard numerology as a number of worldly authority and the mastery of material affairs, the doubled four of order giving it a reputation for solidity and hard work. Beyond this reductive reading and the disputed master-number claim, forty-four carries no traditional lore; it is not a figure of scripture or of the classical symbolic systems. The responsible summary is that its significance is entirely a product of modern numerology, and even there its elevated status is a minority view.

The extension of master-number status to forty-four, and to other repeated two-digit numbers beyond eleven, twenty-two and thirty-three, is a considerably later development than any of the system's four founding texts; Balliett in 1908, Cheiro in 1926, Campbell in 1931 and Jordan in 1965 all confine unreduced master-number treatment to those original three, and Underwood Dudley's critical survey of the system would place the later extension among the ways a commercially motivated tradition keeps generating new marketable claims. Forty-four is also a repdigit, a number written with a single digit repeated, one of just nine two-digit repdigits between ten and ninety-nine, a purely notational curiosity with no bearing on either its arithmetic value or the master-number debate recorded above.
