What the Systems Assign

Fifty-three is prime, and the older number-symbolic systems, which developed the notable primes selectively, did not take it up. Modern numerology reduces it to eight and reads it as a number of material capability and authority, the eight reached through a five of change and a three of expression. Beyond the chapter of Isaiah and this reductive reading, fifty-three has no traditional body of lore, and the candid description is a number remembered almost entirely for a chapter number.

Balliett's 1908 chart reduces fifty-three to eight, the same digital root already noted for twenty-six, thirty-five and forty-four, material capability and worldly authority in the standard modern keyword list; the reading has no connection to Isaiah 53 or to the Jewish and Christian readings of the Servant Songs already described, the American system having been assembled without reference to the chapter divisions of any scriptural text. In chemistry, fifty-three is the atomic number of iodine, an element essential to human thyroid function and, since the early twentieth century, added to table salt in many countries specifically to prevent the goitre and cognitive impairment iodine deficiency otherwise causes. Isaiah 53's own place in Jewish and Christian reading remains a matter of longstanding interpretive dispute, over whether the suffering servant names the nation, a righteous remnant or a single figure, a debate the iodine fact above has no bearing on.
