690 Hymns, Kept Findable a Century Later

A denominational hymnal from 1910 is exactly the kind of publication that ordinarily disappears, printed for congregational use rather than for permanence, replaced by later editions, and eventually surviving only in scattered church basements and a handful of research libraries. This one has fared better than most, thanks to the ordinary, unglamorous work of hymn bibliography. Hymnary.org, a specialist reference maintained jointly by the Hymn Society, the American Theological Library Association and Calvin University, has catalogued the full run of the volume's 690 numbered hymns and made page scans of the original book available for anyone to consult directly.

That kind of infrastructure matters more than it might first appear. Without a project deliberately built to track exactly this sort of denominational publication, a hymnal like this one would be genuinely difficult for a researcher, or simply an interested descendant of a Wesleyan Methodist congregation, to locate and verify at all. Its survival in an easily searchable, page scanned form is a small but real illustration of how specialist bibliographic infrastructure, quiet and rarely noticed, keeps ordinary religious publishing history from being lost simply because nobody thought, at the time, that it was worth preserving.
