Virgo 26: The Boy with the Censer

A boy serves at the altar, carrying a censer for the priest during a formal religious rite, a junior, supporting role in a ceremony whose full meaning he may not yet fully grasp even as he performs his own small part in it correctly. Mercury rules the decan and Mars the term. Jones took this from Wheeler in the 1925 Balboa Park session; the reading here is Rudhyar's 1973 language, and it is one of his more expansive cosmic claims, lifting a specific, modest, recognizable altar role into a statement about humanity's whole evolutionary participation in something much larger than any single service.

The shadow is a role performed correctly by habit and training well before its meaning is actually understood, ritual competence arriving ahead of comprehension. Virgo's own respect for careful, correct performance of a defined task, whether or not the larger purpose is yet grasped, gives the altar boy a natural home in the sign, competence itself treated as valuable before understanding has fully caught up to it. No particular faith or denomination is specified for the altar either, leaving the ceremony general enough to represent formal ritual service as such rather than any one church's own rite.
