Virgo 21: The Girls' Basketball Team

A team of girls plays basketball together, physical training organized around a shared game rather than around any single athlete's individual performance, coordination and practice serving the team's success rather than any one player's alone. Mercury now takes over the decan, the sign's final third, its own ruling planet returning to preside directly, while Jupiter still holds the term through this last degree of its own stretch.

Wheeler produced this image in the 1925 Balboa Park session, a period when organized girls' athletics were a genuinely newer and less settled institution than they are now; the reading here is Rudhyar's 1973 wording, treating the sport primarily as a vehicle for belonging rather than for competition in its own right. The shadow is participation valued mainly for its social function, athletic skill treated as secondary to the collective feeling it produces. Virgo, ruled once more here by its own planet, meets a scene about disciplined, coordinated bodies working together, a natural pairing for a sign that prizes exactly that kind of trained, cooperative competence. On a natal or progressed point the degree tends to mark belonging built through drill and repetition, and its fair test is whether the team still has room for the person a player is once the game ends.
