Charubel's image for this degree is a landscape at first light: an extensive forest, and in the distance the sun just peeping above the horizon, flooding the tops of the trees with glowing rays. John Thomas, the Welsh astrologer publishing as Charubel in 1898, gave each degree of the zodiac an image, and this one runs on a single optical fact, that dawn reaches the canopy long before it reaches the ground. The forest is multitude, thousands of lives standing together, and the light arrives from outside it, gilding the crowns while the floor stays dark.
Read against the twenty second degree of Virgo the scene suggests illumination working from the top of a system downward, clarity that touches the visible surface of things first and must be waited for below, morning as a process rather than an event. There is patience in it, and hierarchy, and the promise that the flooding continues. Beside the engraved distinction the 1925 set gives this degree, Charubel's dawn distributes its honour to a whole treeline.
The craft of degree meanings is old: Vettius Valens assigned each sign three planetary faces in the second century, Ptolemy preserved the unequal Egyptian bounds, and the first complete run of degree pictures survives in Johannes Angelus's Astrolabium Planum, printed in 1494; the Welsh book renewed the practice. At this degree the Egyptian term passes to Mars under Mercury's face, edge beneath the gilding. Where a natal or progressed point falls here, the tone is gradual illumination, light earned downward.
