Virgo 29: Mercury's Decan Under Saturn's Term

The twenty ninth degree of Virgo is the penultimate degree of the sign, and its image comes from the 1925 session in which Marc Edmund Jones recorded the whole circle from the clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler at Balboa Park. The phrasing in general use is Dane Rudhyar's, published in 1973 and in copyright until 2069, so it is withheld here and on the degree's own entry alike. What remains, and it is a good deal, is where the degree sits.

The third decan of Virgo, degrees twenty one to thirty, is Mercury's face, so the sign's own ruler governs the closing third. Across that decan the Egyptian bounds hand the last two degrees to Saturn. Mercury under Saturn at the end of a sign is a distinctive combination: the quick, discriminating faculty brought up against limit, consequence and time. Saturn here does not contradict Mercury so much as slow it down and ask what it has actually established. The degree therefore reads as the point at which Virgo's analysis is required to produce a conclusion rather than a further refinement.

The position in the sign reinforces it. A twenty ninth degree is the last full degree before the sign hands over, in this case to Libra and to relation, so whatever has been sorted here has to be finished and made presentable to somebody else. Where a natal or progressed point falls at this degree, that is the tone to read: closing work under a serious ruler. The Welsh catalogue's image for this degree is public domain and is described in the companion article on this page.
