A Voice That Outlasted Its Founder

Family Talk was still growing when James Dobson died on August 21, 2025, at age eighty nine, fifteen years after he launched it. By his own organization's account, the broadcast had reached more than 1,300 terrestrial radio outlets and numerous digital channels by that point, drawing millions of listeners each month, a figure the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute states on its own website rather than a figure independently audited by an outside ratings service. Whatever its precise scale, the program had clearly become a genuine broadcasting operation in its own right rather than a coda to Dobson's earlier career at Focus on the Family.

Family Talk continues broadcasting today, carried forward by the institute Dobson built specifically so that his second ministry would not depend on his own health or longevity the way a one man broadcast can. That design decision distinguishes Family Talk from many religious radio programs built around a single founding voice: rather than ending or being reformatted after its founder's death, the program continues under the organizational structure Dobson set up in 2010, still reaching the Salem Media Group affiliate stations and independent Christian broadcasters that carried it during his lifetime, still built around the same evangelical family and culture commentary format he first developed on a fifteen minute weekly radio slot back in 1977.
