Ahimsa and the Categories of Violence

Jain philosophical literature refines ahimsa with a precision the broader pan Indic doctrine does not require, distinguishing categories of violence by intention and necessity rather than treating all harm as equivalent: sankalpi himsa, intentional violence undertaken for no necessary purpose, is judged most severely, while udyami himsa, occupational violence unavoidable in a given livelihood, and virodhi himsa, violence in unavoidable self defence, are treated as lesser faults a householder must still work to minimise but cannot be expected to eliminate entirely while remaining in the world. This graded analysis is why the tradition historically steered Jain lay communities toward occupations, trade and finance foremost among them, judged to minimise unavoidable harm compared with agriculture or animal husbandry, a documented historical pattern with real economic consequence for Jain communities across South Asia rather than a purely theoretical distinction.

Padmanabh Jaini's study of the tradition notes that this same graded framework underlies the difference between anuvrata and mahavrata: a lay vow is not ahimsa diluted in principle but ahimsa applied realistically to a life still entangled in occupational and domestic necessity, while the monastic vow removes that entanglement as far as human life allows, which is precisely why sallekhana, fasting at life's end, is reserved for those who have already withdrawn from the occupational and domestic violence a householder cannot fully escape.
