Charubel's image for this degree is deliberately unfinished: four long posts at right angles forming a square, four rails fastened along their tops, the rude framework of some temporary building or shanty. John Thomas, the Welsh astrologer publishing as Charubel in 1898, gave every degree an image, and this one is construction caught at its barest stage, geometry staked out before any wall or roof exists. The frame is honest about itself, temporary, rude, provisional, and that is its meaning: order established first in outline, shelter promised rather than delivered.
Read against the ninth degree of Virgo it suggests the sign's method applied to beginnings, the insistence that even a shanty starts square, corners true before comfort is attempted. There is modesty in it too, building scaled to present need rather than ambition. Where the 1925 set gives this degree an artist forcing a first form onto canvas, Charubel gives a builder doing the same with posts, and the agreement between the two catalogues here is unusually close.
The practice they share is old: Vettius Valens assigned planetary faces to each third of a sign in the second century, Ptolemy preserved the unequal Egyptian bounds, and the first complete degree picture set survives in Johannes Angelus's Astrolabium Planum of 1494. This degree opens Venus's long middle term of Virgo under the Sun's face, proportion entering the frame.
