What traditions hold and do
This section covers the content of religious life at close range: the articles of belief and the dietary and behavioural restrictions that go with them, the formal rituals, the sustained practices, and the holidays of the calendar.
The four categories move from the stated to the enacted, from what is believed, to what is required or forbidden, to what is done as rite, to what is kept as ongoing practice, to what is marked on the calendar. Together they describe not the theology of a tradition in the abstract but the shape of a life lived within it.
