A gathering, often outdoors or in a rented hall, opens with words consecrating the space and calling on the god, ancestors, or land spirits the rite honors, followed by an offering, most commonly mead or ale rather than the animal blood the medieval sagas describe, poured into a bowl and then out onto the earth or into a fire. A horn is typically filled from the same offering and passed among the participants, each person drinking and often speaking a toast or a boast before passing it on, so the rite blends formal offering with the same communal drinking structure found in the separate sumbel rite.
The stated purpose is reciprocal rather than petitionary in the way a request to a distant deity might be: the offering is understood to renew a relationship of hospitality and obligation between the community and the powers it addresses, building or maintaining what the sources call frith, a settled peace, and luck, a kind of communal fortune thought to accumulate through right relationship rather than being granted as a single favor. Modern Heathen organizations differ in how formal the rite is kept, some following a fixed liturgy modeled closely on saga descriptions and others treating the structure as a loose frame for a specific occasion, a harvest, a naming, or a seasonal turning point.
