From Nine Mile to a Committed Rastafari

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Bob Marley, born Robert Nesta Marley on February 6, 1945, in Nine Mile, Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica, became a committed Rastafari following his 1966 marriage to Rita Marley, a conversion that reshaped both his own life and the direction of the music he went on to record. Rastafari theology, centered on the divinity of Haile Selassie I and a lived critique of the social order Rastafari adherents call Babylon, became the worldview Marley carried directly into his reggae recordings from that point onward rather than remaining a private belief separate from his public work.

Marley had grown up amid Jamaica's own mix of Christian and folk religious influences before that specific 1966 turn toward Rastafari, so his conversion marked a deliberate change of religious direction in early adulthood rather than a simple continuation of a single faith practiced without interruption from childhood. That fusion of a specific religious conversion with a musical career already underway is central to why Marley's own recordings reached listeners who had no other contact with Rastafari as a movement: the songs carried the theology outward embedded in music rather than through separate religious teaching, reaching an international audience Rastafari's own institutions in Jamaica had never previously reached on anything like the same scale.
