How a Silent God Became the Horned God of Wicca

Cernunnos owes a great deal of his modern prominence to a scholarly argument now considered discredited by the historians who study it most closely. The Egyptologist turned folklorist Margaret Murray argued, most fully in The Witch Cult in Western Europe (1921), that the witch trials of early modern Europe had persecuted the surviving adherents of an ancient, unified pan European fertility religion centered on a horned male deity, and antlered figures such as Cernunnos were drawn into her argument as supposed evidence of that god's deep prehistoric pedigree. Murray's witch cult theory gained wide popular currency for decades and directly shaped Gerald Gardner's construction of Wicca in the mid twentieth century, in which a Horned God, paired with a Great Goddess, became one of the tradition's two central deities, with Cernunnos frequently named as the historical figure standing behind that role.

Specialist historians, most influentially Ronald Hutton in The Triumph of the Moon (1999), have since shown Murray's evidence to be selectively read and her continuous pan European witch cult to be essentially unsupported by the actual trial records she cited, a conclusion now accepted across the field of early modern history. What survives from antiquity is genuinely thin, a single inscribed name and a handful of images, with no continuous line of transmission connecting the Gaulish antlered god to twentieth century witchcraft. Cernunnos's status as the Horned God is therefore best understood as a modern religious development built on top of a real but sparse ancient figure, not a hidden continuity the ancient evidence itself can support, a distinction contemporary Pagan scholarship itself increasingly acknowledges.
