The Physician of the Soul, Healer of the Cosmos, on the Lurianic kabbalah that supplied much of Hasidism's conceptual vocabulary, situates Chabad's emphasis on structured contemplation as an answer to exactly that criticism from within the Hasidic movement itself, routing the same devotional intensity other Hasidic courts sought through song and spontaneous fervor through a disciplined intellectual discipline the misnagdim could recognize as serious rather than merely emotional. The Tanya frames the resulting practice as distinctive among the Hasidic courts that multiplied across Eastern Europe in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, most of which centered devotional life on direct emotional connection to a living rebbe's own charisma, while Chabad taught that a disciple should be able to reconstruct the intellectual path to devotion independently, through the concepts Chochmah, Binah and Daat lay out, rather than relying primarily on the rebbe's felt presence.Cross-Tradition ConnectionsArticle OnContemplative Prayer Worked Through the Faculties of Chochmah, Binah and Daat, Beliefs & Restrictions Well-attested Source Physician of the Soul, Healer of the Cosmos: Isaac Luria and His Kabbalistic FellowshipLawrence Finetier 1SourcesPhysician of the Soul, Healer of the Cosmos: Isaac Luria and His Kabbalistic Fellowshiptier 1Lawrence Fine, Stanford University Press, 2003Physician of the Soul, Healer of the Cosmos, on the misnagdic critique Chabad's contemplative path answersView the SourceTanya (Likkutei Amarim)tier 1Shneur Zalman of Liady, 1797Shneur Zalman's Tanya, on the disciple's own reconstruction of the intellectual pathView the SourceComments (0)No comments yet.
