By the time James Dobson died on August 21, 2025, at age eighty nine, the ministry he had built after leaving Focus on the Family had grown into a substantial broadcasting operation in its own right. The Dr. James Dobson Family Institute's own account states that Family Talk airs on more than 1,300 terrestrial radio outlets and numerous digital channels, reaching millions of people each month, a reach built largely through syndication via Salem Media Group, whose affiliate stations in major markets including New York, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Houston and Atlanta carried the program alongside Salem's own Christian and conservative talk lineup.
The institute's continuation after Dobson's death was not an accident of institutional inertia. Unlike Focus on the Family, which Dobson had already handed to new leadership years before his departure, the James Dobson Family Institute was built as a going concern from the start, with a governance and ministry structure meant to outlast any one broadcaster, including its own founder. Family Talk continues broadcasting today under that structure, carrying Dobson's format, if no longer his own voice, to the audience Salem Media Group's affiliate network and the institute's own digital channels still reach every month.
