Engenas Lekganyane founded the Zion Christian Church, drawing on Zionist healing practice that had reached South Africa from Zion City, Illinois, in the early twentieth century. Out of that Zionist tradition of preaching and faith healing, Lekganyane built an institution that grew into the largest African Initiated Church in Southern Africa.
The church he founded is headquartered at Moria, in what is now Limpopo Province, South Africa, a site that under his leadership and his successors' became the fixed center of the movement's religious life. An African Initiated Church founded by a single Zionist preacher grew, from that one headquarters, into the largest religious body of its kind in the region.
That scale sets the Zion Christian Church apart from most of the many African Initiated Churches that trace to the same early twentieth century Zionist healing movement out of Zion City. Lekganyane's church, built on a shared inheritance many other African Initiated Churches also drew on, became the one that grew largest.
The institution he built has outlasted him by generations, still headquartered at the site he established and still counted as the largest African Initiated Church in Southern Africa, a scale that traces directly back to the church Lekganyane founded out of an early twentieth century Zionist healing tradition.
