Suppressing Five Yellow

The standard remedy for an afflicted Five Yellow sector follows the same earth-produces-metal logic used for Two Black, introducing metal objects, most often a hollow metal item such as a bell or a set of coins, on the reasoning that metal drains an excess of earth energy rather than confronting it directly, since a direct wood-against-earth clash is held to provoke rather than calm the star's difficult nature. Feng shui consultants working in the annual practice most visible to the public devote disproportionate attention to Five Yellow's yearly position for exactly this reason, since it is the single star whose sector households are most consistently advised to leave undisturbed for the year.

Because Five Yellow occupied the centre of the base chart throughout the whole of Period 5, roughly the mid twentieth century under standard dating, some practitioners hold that buildings constructed during that period carry a structurally heavier version of the star's influence than buildings from other periods, an additional layer of caution applied on top of the star's ordinary annual movement through the grid.
