Suppression, Revival, and a Deliberately Dark Reading

The Fraternitas Saturni was founded in Berlin in 1926 out of the collapse of a Pansophic lodge, and it took Crowley's Law of Thelema while reading it differently. Where Crowley's formula centres on the will and love, Gregorius set a Saturnian emphasis on severity, testing and the discipline of the threshold, and the order made no attempt to soften that. Saturn is the planet of limit, time and the hard teacher, and the order chose it knowingly.

Like every German lodge of its kind, it did not survive the 1930s as an open body. Secret societies were suppressed under the National Socialist regime, the lodge closed, and Grosche spent the war years without an organisation. He reconstituted it after 1945 and led it until his death in 1964, after which it continued through several changes of leadership and at least one significant schism.

The order is worth including for what it shows about transmission. It is a case of a German lodge receiving Thelema at second hand, in a different language and a different intellectual climate, and producing something its source would not have recognised. That happens constantly in this field and is usually invisible, because most orders present themselves as faithful carriers. This one made its divergence part of its identity.
