Gaja Kesari Yoga, the elephant and lion combination, is formed when Jupiter stands in an angle, a kendra, from the Moon, that is in the first, fourth, seventh or tenth place counted from the Moon. It is among the best known of the yogas of Jyotisha and is read for intelligence, good reputation, prosperity and the favour of others; the name pairs the two royal animals of Indian symbolism.
In practice the combination is common, since a quarter of all charts will have Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon on the geometry alone, and the classical texts qualify it heavily: the strength of Jupiter, whether it is well placed by sign, whether it is afflicted, and the condition of the Moon all bear on whether the yoga produces anything. Yogas in general are read as modifying factors within a whole chart, not as independent verdicts, and a yoga present in a weak or damaged form is not taken to deliver its result.
