Why Debate Rather Than a Lecture

The justification given inside the tradition is that a position accepted because a teacher stated it and a position that has survived being attacked from every angle it can be attacked from are not the same kind of knowledge, and only the second is considered actually understood. The format descends from the Indian Buddhist logicians Dignaga and Dharmakirti, whose systems of valid cognition and formal inference were carried into Tibet, adapted into the syllogistic exchange used in the colleges today, and eventually made the primary vehicle of instruction rather than an occasional exercise layered on top of lecture and memorization. A young monk still memorizes root texts and commentaries extensively before ever debating them, but Dreyfus's account of his own training stresses that memorization was treated as raw material, not the finished product. The material only counted as learned once it had been deployed against a live opponent trying to find its weakest point, and a monk who could recite a text perfectly but could not defend its claims under pressure was not considered to have understood it at all, only to have stored it. Each monastic college also maintains its own textbook tradition, called yig cha, a body of commentary specific to that college that shapes how its monks are trained to construct and defend syllogisms even when addressing the same root texts studied elsewhere in the Gelug system, so a debate between monks from different colleges can turn as much on which commentarial tradition each was raised in as on the root text itself.
