A London Taxi Driver Hears a Voice From Space

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

George King was an English taxi driver and practitioner of yoga before he became the founder of a new religious movement built around contact with beings he described as living beyond Earth. He said that in May 1959 an inner voice, which he later identified as belonging to a being he called Cosmic Master Aetherius, told him to prepare himself as the voice of an Interplanetary Parliament on Earth.

King had already founded The Aetherius Society in London in 1955 to spread the teachings he said he received from Aetherius and other Cosmic Masters. The organization he built blended his own background in yogic spiritual practice with a UFO centered cosmology holding that advanced extraterrestrial beings actively guide humanity's spiritual development from beyond the planet.

That combination, a taxi driver's personal yoga discipline joined to claimed direct contact with cosmic intelligences, gave The Aetherius Society a distinctive founding identity among the new religious movements of postwar Britain, one built less on inherited scripture than on King's own reported communications with beings he held to be watching over human development from elsewhere in the wider cosmos, a claim central to the Society's founding message from its earliest days in London.
