Belief and Significance

For Latter-day Saints the golden plates are not a curiosity but a cornerstone: they are the source of the Book of Mormon, which the Church regards as scripture alongside the Bible, and the witnesses' testimonies are read aloud, taught, and cherished as evidence of the Restoration. The imagery of the plates and of the angel Moroni is woven through Latter-day Saint art, architecture, and devotion; a statue of Moroni crowns many temples. The account also shaped the movement's early identity and its self-understanding as the recipient of a new revelation.
