Eighty Four Lines Across Four Languages

The dharani entered Chinese Buddhism through translation efforts in the seventh century CE, precisely the period when the monk and pilgrim Xuanzang was producing the era's most systematic translation work and, alongside it, articulating explicit criteria for when a term should be transliterated rather than translated. Dharanis and mantras were one of the categories Xuanzang held should never be rendered into ordinary Chinese vocabulary, on the reasoning that their effect depends on the preserved sound rather than on conveyed meaning, and this decision has governed the transmission of the Great Compassion Dharani ever since: Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Vietnamese Buddhists all chant essentially the same transliterated syllables today, adapted only to each language's phonetics, rather than reciting a translated paraphrase in their own tongue the way ordinary sutra text is read.

Only the dharani's opening lines correspond to recognisable Sanskrit vocabulary, homage to the three jewels and to the noble Avalokiteshvara, before the text moves into a much longer sequence of syllables that specialists in Buddhist Sanskrit generally cannot parse as ordinary grammar, whether because the underlying Sanskrit was already corrupted in transmission before it reached China, or because dharani syllables of this length were never intended as parseable sentences in the first place. This uncertainty is itself part of why the tradition transliterates rather than translates: a text nobody can confidently render into sense is treated as sound to be preserved rather than as content to be conveyed, and daily chanting across four countries has kept that sound remarkably stable for well over a thousand years.
