Legge's rendering names the position perilous and the stopping advantageous, and offers no third option.

The temptation the line addresses is the one felt by capable people at the start of something: the impulse is sound, the energy is real, and neither is enough. Great Taming is a hexagram of accumulation, and its opening position is where accumulation has not yet happened. What the reading asks for is not abandonment of the aim but recognition that the aim has arrived ahead of the resources it will need to reach.

A strong stroke correctly placed at the base of the lower trigram Qian, this line sits as far as possible from the release the topmost position eventually grants. A reading landing here is early rather than final. The counsel to halt should be heard as a matter of timing rather than of permission, and the four positions above it describe in some detail what the waiting is meant to be spent on. Nothing in the wording suggests the advance is wrong in itself, only that it is being attempted from the one position in the hexagram least able to sustain it.
