An Inner Voice Begins Dictating in October 1965

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Helen Schucman was an American clinical and research psychologist, a professor of medical psychology at Columbia University from 1958 until her retirement in 1976. Beginning October 21, 1965, she said an inner voice she identified as Jesus began dictating to her the material that became A Course in Miracles, working alongside her Columbia colleague William Thetford as the process unfolded. The dictation continued through 1972, seven years during which Schucman received and recorded the material that would eventually be published as the Course.

Schucman held a doctorate in psychology from New York University, credentials that placed the person receiving the dictation squarely within conventional academic psychology rather than in any existing religious or esoteric tradition. She continued to publish ordinary academic research both before and during the years in which she was also recording the material for the Course, maintaining two distinct kinds of work side by side across the same period rather than setting the academic career aside for the dictation.

A Course in Miracles was first published in 1976, four years after the dictation Schucman described had concluded, giving the seven year process of 1965 to 1972 time to be organized into the form in which readers would eventually encounter it, a gap between the dictation's end and the book's appearance that this record states as documented fact.
