Holotropic Breathwork exists because a research program was cut short. Stanislav Grof, a Czech-born psychiatrist, spent the 1950s and 1960s conducting clinical research into LSD-assisted psychotherapy, first in Czechoslovakia and then at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center in the United States, studying the non-ordinary states of consciousness the drug reliably induced and their apparent therapeutic value. When LSD research was legally restricted in the United States in the early 1970s, that method closed to him.
He and his wife Christina Grof, working at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, spent the middle years of the decade developing an alternative: a technique using sustained, accelerated breathing, evocative music and supportive bodywork to induce states they held to be similar in kind to what the earlier drug research had produced, without the substance itself. They named it holotropic, from Greek roots meaning moving toward wholeness, and built around it the wider theoretical framework the Grofs called transpersonal psychology, treating certain non-ordinary states as potentially meaningful psychological material rather than only as symptoms to be suppressed. The technique they developed as a substitute became, over the following decades, a practice in its own right, taught through a worldwide network of certified facilitators independent of the psychedelic research that had originally prompted it.
