From 16 to 19 November 2019, the International Confucian Association held its Sixth Congress in Beijing together with an international conference marking the 2570th anniversary of Confucius's birth. The Association hosted the gathering with UNESCO and the China Confucius Foundation, co-hosted by the China Public Diplomacy Association and the Guiyang Confucius Academy, under the theme Confucianism and Building a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind.
About eight hundred guests attended the opening ceremony, and roughly four hundred scholars specializing in Confucianism took part in the congress's academic sessions.
Chinese Vice President Wang Qishan addressed the opening ceremony on 16 November on behalf of President Xi Jinping and the Chinese government, extending congratulations to the conference and describing Confucianism as a resource the Association could use to build understanding between civilizations.
What the Beijing congress changed for the International Confucian Association's own standing was pairing its Sixth Congress with a state level address, delivered by the country's vice president rather than a lower ranking official, at a gathering that also marked a named anniversary of Confucius's birth and drew UNESCO and two further co-hosting bodies into the same four days, before an audience of roughly eight hundred at the opening and about four hundred specialist scholars across the sessions that followed it.
