As Japan moved toward war, roughly 400 police investigated Tenrikyo's own headquarters on 16 December 1935, acting on tax evasion charges the movement's own history records as unsubstantiated. The raid came nearly three decades after Tenrikyo had finally won independent standing as a recognized branch of Sect Shinto in 1908, a recognition the investigation did nothing to formally revoke but plainly did not respect.
Worse followed in 1939, when the government's Instruction Eight forced a doctrinal reformation on the church rather than merely investigating it. Copies of the Ofudesaki and Osashizu, Tenrikyo's own scriptures, were recalled from circulation, and the Kagura service, central to Tenrikyo worship, was prohibited outright, a state order reaching directly into the movement's own ritual practice rather than only its finances or its legal paperwork.
What this renewed suppression changed for Tenrikyo was the return, three decades after independence, of the same kind of state pressure the movement had spent from the 1870s into 1908 trying to escape. A church that had already survived one long era of surveillance and denied petitions found its own core scriptures recalled and its own central service banned outright, proof that legal recognition in 1908 had not settled the state's tolerance for Tenrikyo for good.
