How the Tsubaki Grand Shrine Opened the First Postwar Shinto Shrine on the US Mainland

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

In 1986, Rev. Dr. Yukitaka Yamamoto, the ninety sixth high priest of the Tsubaki Grand Shrine in Mie, Japan, founded the Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America in Stockton, California. It was the first Shinto shrine built on the American mainland since the Second World War, decades after the faith had first reached the United States through Japanese immigrants in Hawaii.

Shinto's earlier American history had not been an easy one. The Hawaiian community had endured wartime suspicion during the Pacific war, and in the four decades that followed, the tradition had gained no shrine of its own anywhere on the continental mainland, even as Japanese communities grew across the West Coast and beyond.

Yamamoto's new shrine changed that directly. It gave Shinto a fixed, purpose built home outside Japan and outside Hawaii for the first time, a physical centre where practice could be carried out on American soil rather than only remembered or improvised from a distance.

What the 1986 founding changed for Shinto's spread was the difference between a faith carried informally by an immigrant community and one with its own consecrated ground on the mainland. A tradition that had waited more than four decades since its first American arrival finally had a shrine built for it rather than merely alongside it.
