Initiate, The Martinist Order's Second Founding Degree

Initiate is the second of the three founding degrees of the Martinist Order, conferred after Associate and before Superior Unknown. The order draws on the theurgical Christian mysticism of Louis Claude de Saint Martin and was organized into its modern institutional form by Papus, the pen name of Gerard Encausse, in the late nineteenth century, a period of considerable activity in French esoteric organizing more broadly.

As the middle degree of the founding three, Initiate occupies the same transitional structural role within the Martinist sequence that Fellow Craft occupies within Freemasonry's own three degree Craft system: a stage a candidate passes through rather than one most members are expected to remain at, positioned between Associate's entry level and Superior Unknown's terminal rank in the order's original design.

Some later Martinist bodies have expanded this original three degree structure with additional grades, reflecting the broader pattern of institutional splits and elaborations that shaped French esoteric societies descending from Papus's late nineteenth century organizing work, but the founding sequence of Associate, Initiate and Superior Unknown remains the reference point every later variant is measured against.
