During a 1274 pilgrimage to the Kumano shrine, Ippen experienced a revelation in which the kami enshrined there told him that enlightenment was already determined by Amida Buddha, a documented message distinct from a general call to greater devotion, and that his own task was to spread the nembutsu, the invocation of Amida's name, to everyone regardless of that person's own faith or purity. That last clause is documented as the specific content of the revelation rather than a later gloss on it: rebirth was already settled by Amida's vow, so a hearer's own belief or moral standing was not, on this account, a precondition for benefiting from the practice.
Before that pilgrimage Ippen had studied Tendai teaching on Mount Hiei and Pure Land teaching at Dazaifu in Kyushu, a documented training distinct from the itinerant preaching he took up afterward, and the Kumano revelation is recorded as the point at which his own teaching shifted from studied doctrine toward a practice offered without any qualifying condition attached to the person receiving it. He and a band of followers then travelled the length of Japan on the strength of that single recorded message.
That a revelation received at one shrine on one dated pilgrimage instructed a trained Tendai and Pure Land scholar to offer a practice already settled by Amida's vow to everyone regardless of their own faith or purity marks the Kumano revelation as a documented case where a single message removed the qualifying conditions the teaching that preceded it had assumed.
