Zeffirelli's Restraint, and the Cast That Carried It

Franco Zeffirelli cast a relatively unknown Robert Powell as Jesus and surrounded him with an unusually deep bench of established actors in supporting roles: Laurence Olivier, Anthony Quinn, Rod Steiger, James Earl Jones, Peter Ustinov, Anne Bancroft and Ernest Borgnine, among others, several already Academy Award winners by 1977. The choice of a lesser-known lead was deliberate, letting Jesus be received as the character rather than as a star performance layered over him, while the star-studded surrounding cast gave each supporting scene its own weight.

Co-written by Zeffirelli with Anthony Burgess and Suso Cecchi d'Amico, the production deliberately avoided the miracle-heavy spectacle that biblical epics before it, including The Ten Commandments, had built their marketing around; healings and other wonders are staged with restraint rather than as effects sequences. It premiered on Italy's Rai 1 on 27 March 1977 and reached the United Kingdom on the ITV Network shortly after, to strong ratings and reviews, and the production went on to become a fixture of Christian television broadcasting, particularly around Christmas and Easter, in the decades that followed, a reception this atlas records as attested fact rather than as its own theological judgment.
