Kanya is the sixth rashi, the Vedic sign of the maiden, corresponding to Virgo. In jyotisha it is ruled by Mercury (Budha), and it is the rare sign that is both the rulership and the exaltation of the same planet, Mercury is held to be exalted here as well as owning it. Its quality is dual or mutable (dvisvabhava), and its element is earth (prithvi tattva). Jyotisha reads Kanya through Mercury's discrimination and the maiden's purity: analysis, service, precision, and the careful sorting of detail. As a sidereal sign it is fixed to the stars and runs about 24 degrees behind tropical Virgo. Mercury's rulership of the maiden is shared with Western astrology; the tradition's reading of Mercury doubly strong here is distinctive to jyotisha.
Kanya, maiden or virgin, translates the Greek parthenos directly, a transmission that reached Sanskrit through the Yavanajataka, a versification of a Greek astrological text of roughly the second through fourth centuries CE, itself built on the twelve equal signs Babylonian celestial divination had already fixed by the fifth or fourth century BCE, a scheme with no precedent in the older Vedic corpus. Mercury's unusual double dignity in Kanya, ruling the sign and exalted in it as well, belongs to a later classical layer of the tradition, standardly credited to compilations such as the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra of roughly the seventh or eighth century CE; the same double dignity is preserved in the equivalent tropical Virgo, one of the clearer signs that the two systems still share a single ancestral source despite their different reckoning of the zodiac's starting point.
